He was a Mukansa sword maker and also a human national treasure of Miyagi prefecture. The sword is the best quality without kizu.
More History on 8th Gen Nobufusa,
Nobufusa's real name is Takahashi Noboru born May 15, 1909, lived in Miyagi prefecture, made swords during WWII time period and after the war as a Gendaito smith. He studied and revived the Yamato Tradition. He was recognized as a true heir
of Hosho School of Yamato Tradition, and was designated as a Tangible Important Cultural Property of Miyagi Prefecture. He was a student of his father the 7th Gen whom worked in Bizen and Yamato Traditions. Early on he apprenticed under "SASAKI ICHIRYUSAI SADATOSHI" from who he learned his skills in the Koto Bizen style.
THE MAJORITY OF HIS PRE-WAR AND WAR TIME BLADES WERE MADE IN THE KOTO BIZEN STYLE LIKE THIS ONE! HIS BLADES OF THIS PERIOD EXHIBIT GREAT SKILL!!! THE MAJORITY OF THEM WERE CUSTOM ORDERED, BY HIGH RANKING IMPERIAL JAPANESE MILITARY OFFICERS.
Nobufusa is a very highly rated swordsmith of the 20th century at 2.5 million Yen! Reference "An Oshigata Book of Modern Japanese Swordsmiths 1868-1945" by John Scott Slough this smith is placed in the highest position as "Special Honor" for Sensei. This is higher than the “First Seat” position. His colleagues among this rank/status are Shibata Ka & Yoshihara Kunie who was the Teacher of Yoshihara Yoshindo.
The hamon pattern / temper Line & Hada Of His Early "Bizen Tradition" Blades Are Equally as Fine as His Later Yamato style Blades. THE BIZEN BLADES ARE CONSIDERABLY SCARCER!!!!!!
However. His "BIZEN SAKA CHOJI" (REARWARD SLANTING CHOJI (CLOVER LEAF'S) WAS THE KEY FACTOR TO HIS WINNING MANY CONTEST'S. IN SHOWA 29, 30, AND 31, HE Placed His Bizen, & Yamato Works On “BITO'" Exhibition ("BIJUTSU Token"), & Won the Coveted "DORYOKU" Award Twice, & the "SHOREI" Award 4 Times. In 1967 he was officially Granted The Title of "MUKEI BUNKAZAI" (Living Treasure) Or Intangible Cultural Asset!!!!!
After The End Of The War, & during The Years Of Occupation Nobufusa (As With All Sword Makers) Halted The Production of all Swords. It is Said That Nobufusa Did NOT Allow These Years to Pass Without Benefit. He Made A Diligent Study Of The Yamato hosho Tradition & in particular the Work of "SHODAI (1st.) GEN. KUNIKANE". It Is Said That He Re-Discovered some of KUNIKANE'S FORGOTTEN TECHNIQUES, & Later Incorporated Them Into His Works. He TRULY REVIVED The "YAMATO HOSHO" TRADITION!!
In January 1954, Nobufusa Was Licensed To Produce Blades Once Again. He Worked Mainly In The "YAMATO TRADITION" From that time on. The Exceptional quality of His Work Bears Credence To The Fact That His Studies during The occupation years Were A Good investment.
Its Easily Seen That "HOKKE SABURO NOBUFUSA" Was A Sword Smith That Excelled In Persistence, Achievement, & ERUDITE PURSUITS. His Re-Discovery, & Application of Many Lost Secrets Of The "YAMATO HOSHO", & "BIZEN" schools Are A Major Contribution To The "ART OF SWORD MAKING", It Is Both A Honor, & A Privilege To Own A Fine Example Of His (Coveted) Work, & ONE OF THE MOST PRUDENT INVESTMENTS THAT COULD BE MADE!!!!!
